Chiropractic Care for Golfer's Elbow

Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis or epicondylopathy), also known as pitcher's elbow, is a relatively common sports injury that causes pain in the inside of the elbow. Resting the injury can help to ease the symptoms in the short term but proper care is often needed to fully recover from the injury and to prevent it from reoccurring. Chiropractic care can help to treat golfer's elbow using non-invasive techniques that focus on helping the musculoskeletal system to recover.

What is golfer's elbow?

Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis) is usually an overuse injury that is caused by repetitive movements that involve gripping, rotating the arm, and flexing the wrist. It is named golfer's elbow because these types of movements are common when playing gold. But that doesn't mean that it is only golfers that can suffer from this condition. Any similar repetitive activity can cause it and can include pitchers, construction workers, factory workers, bikers, violin players, and more.

Golfer's elbow is similar to tennis elbow and it is the same bone that is affected - the bony bump of the elbow. But the injury is slightly different because it is caused by a different type of movement. With tennis elbow, the pain is on the outside of the elbow but with golfer's elbow, it is on the inside of the elbow, just below the bend. The pain often radiates from the forearm down to the wrist and you may also find that you have difficulty with certain arm movements, such as:

  • Lifting or bending the arm
  • Twisting movements
  • Gripping

Golfer's elbow can take a long time to get better, sometimes even months. Finding the right type of care can help to speed up recovery and to treat it fully so that it doesn't come back.

How chiropractic care can help with golfer's elbow

The pain from golfer's elbow happens because the repetitive movements cause tiny tears in the tendons that surround the elbow, which can then trigger an inflammatory response.

Golfer's elbow can be difficult to treat using conventional medicine, and many people want to avoid using prescription painkillers and anti-inflammatories. Chiropractic care takes a different approach to treating golfer's elbow by focusing on easing the damage and inflammation involved, reducing the pain, and improving mobility.

The first step to treating golfer's elbow is often rest and ice but this doesn't get to the root of the problem. Chiropractic care can use a variety of techniques that can break up the scar tissues in the tendons, reduce inflammation and pain, and improve the patient's ability to move the arm without further damage. These treatments can include:

  • Active Release Technique
  • Myofascial release
  • Ultrasound or laser therapy
  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Stretching
  • Exercises
  • Lifestyle advice to prevent the injury from happening again

Golfer's elbow can interfere with your ability to take part in everyday activities as well as the particular activity that may have caused the injury. Chiropractic care can treat the issue at its root cause by reducing the damage to the tendons and tissues, which can ease the pain and speed up recovery from the injury. A chiropractor can also provide advice about movements and lifestyle that will help to prevent the injury from happening again.
